Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing

EMDR is a structured therapy that can help you process distressing memories, events, and physical sensations related to trauma. The most widespread use of EMDR is for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). EMDR is an 8 phase treatment method and is usually completed within a series of sessions. The number of sessions needed depends on several factors.

During an EMDR session, a trained therapist guides the individual through a series of eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation, such as tapping or auditory tones. These bilateral stimulations are thought to mimic the rapid eye movement (REM) phase of sleep, which is when the brain processes memories.

While the individual focuses on the traumatic memory, the eye movements or other bilateral stimulation help to reduce the emotional intensity associated with the memory. This process may facilitate the reprocessing of the traumatic memory, allowing it to be integrated into a more adaptive and less distressing form.

EMDR also involves the use of specific protocols and techniques that aim to identify and address negative beliefs and emotions related to the traumatic memory. By targeting and reprocessing these negative associations, EMDR can help individuals experience relief from distressing symptoms and promote psychological healing.

Havening Techniques

Havening is a psycho-sensory technique that aims to help individuals manage and alleviate emotional distress. It was developed by Dr. Ronald Ruden and is based on the premise that sensory input, such as touch and visualization, can alter the brain's response to traumatic or distressing experiences. The technique involves specific movements and gentle touch on the face, arms, and hands while focusing on the distressing memory or emotion. The goal is to facilitate the release of negative emotions and promote a state of calmness and well-being. Havening is often used in conjunction with therapy to help individuals process and overcome traumatic experiences, phobias, anxiety, and other emotional difficulties.

Self-havening refers to the practice of applying Havening techniques to oneself without the assistance of a trained practitioner. It involves using the same psycho-sensory techniques—such as touch, movement, and visualization—to help manage and alleviate emotional distress. By following specific self-havening protocols, individuals can engage in self-soothing and self-regulation to address negative emotions, traumatic memories, or anxiety.
